THE K CHAIR: master outline for a design book

Started 2 Aug 2026. KU chapter list, organized and annotated; additions proposed at the end. Title: DECIDED (2 Aug 2026)

The Hundred-Year Chair: Designing Atoms in the Age of Bits (KU draft had "Design of Atoms"; gerund reads better, KU to confirm). Home: https://hundredyearchair.com (registered, canonical; 100yearchair.com, chair100.com, 100chair.com redirect). Product side: thekchair.com canonical, k-chair.com redirects; kchair.com ($5k) deferred until revenue. TRADEMARK NOTE from the 2 Aug screen: no live US federal registration of "K CHAIR" for furniture surfaced, BUT Karimoku 60's K Chair (Japan, in production since the early 1960s, sold in US/AU through design retailers) is a direct product-name collision on identical goods with strong common-law presence among exactly our buyers; and letter+noun marks are inherently weak. Working strategy: THE HUNDRED-YEAR CHAIR is the protectable commerce brand; "K" persists as the glyph, the geometry mark (distinctive, registrable as a design mark), and the model designation. Full clearance (TESS direct, IP Australia, state/common law) before any sale under a K name.

Proposed structure: four parts plus a prologue

PROLOGUE: The Chair That Ships Flat. The LTU essay, lightly reworked: the whole adventure in miniature, objects as documents, building as reading. Sets voice: first person, evidence on the table, no breathlessness. [HAVE]

PART I: THE URGE (why a chair, why now)

  1. Vision / concept / gap / urge. The itch: a dining chair as the model organism of making; what one artifact can teach about atoms, information, and labor across a century. The gap: design books are either monographs or manuals; this is a lab report with a thesis. [PART: frame exists in century memo]

  2. Ten thousand years of sitting. The body as the invariant: posture map, revealed spec, the lounge cloud; seat heights from Egyptian stools to BIFMA; why 100 degrees keeps being rediscovered. INTERACTIVE (KU, 2 Aug): the Fan explorer: famous chairs pre-populated with per-chair basis notes, checkboxes to compose the overlay, enter-your-own or hypothetical chairs, vertex or front-edge registration. Working prototype: /chair-book/fan-explorer.html (also a desktop artifact). Presets currently carry the lounge-cloud values; the est-from-images entries stay flagged until measured.   3. The chair as designer touchstone: Rietveld, Panton, Judd. (KU list said "Patron"; assumed Panton.) Why every designer eventually makes a chair; the precedent wall; the three poles: economy (Rietveld), architecture-of-one-piece (Panton), refusal-of-the-body (Judd); the counterexamples secnote (Prouve, Beugel, LC-14). PART II: THE WORLD AROUND THE CHAIR (economics)

  1. Economic context: 1930 vs 2030. D494 as the central document; the price ladder then and now in wage-hours; what rotated (cheap material, cheap fastener, cheap labor, expensive distance) and what did not (the body). [PART: century memo sections 1-4; TODO: the [C] computable exhibits]

  2. The global economy: sourcing, freight, containerization. $/m3 of ocean; freight per chair assembled vs nested vs flat; Thonet's 36-per-crate to the 40 ft container; TEMU/IKEA as the continuously published world price; the folding Adirondack as a fourth answer to freight. [PART: reference points captured; TODO: arithmetic exhibits]

  3. What happens if labor is free? Assembly robots at $2/hr deflate both the monobloc's advantage and IKEA's trick while freight stands; cheap assembly + expensive volume favors flat local material + a traveling design: the crate's native regime returns. [PART: endgame section in memo]

  4. Atoms in the age of bits. The durable asset is the information: the design, the test evidence, the bug fixes (330 cleat; the peel), the repair sheet in the cubby. Open design; what replicates; the chair as its own succession plan. Closing inversion: timelessness manufactured out of objects built to be temporary. [PART: memo close; the inversion is written]

PART III: THE ENGINEERING (how the chair actually got designed)

  1. The invention: panels and the cell. The Vilbert read from a photograph; the offset joints; the inscribed quadrilateral; the hub bracket: all geometry in one cross-section, panels reduced to rectangles; thickness-robustness; the load paths. [HAVE: reconstruction, core-quad, bracket CAD lineage]

  2. Parametric optimization. The family sweep; the feasible wedge; rev A-E as a documented walk (each rev a falsified assumption); the trade surface; the seven-sheet block and the parity theorem; sheet-perfect design at 98.5%. The method chapter: constraints first, style emerges. [HAVE: family, zoom, frontface grid, cut map, block rose, full rev history in build log]

  3. The physics of sitting (PROPOSED ADDITION, see below). Fastener pull-through with the AWC anchor and the Xootr deck as 20-year field data; the peel FBD and the friction deficit; the seat-bolt lever arithmetic; failure ordering as design (bolts, then panels, then never the bracket). [HAVE: analyses scattered in chat/log; TODO: consolidate]

  4. Materials and process selection. The trade study: wood slab + inserts vs stamped steel + clinch nuts vs die casting + wire inserts; threads always end in steel; quantity crossovers; one part, eight production regimes; the 9 in circle as a feasible-region boundary in process space. [HAVE: trade study memo, sidebar]

  5. Biomimicry: the bracket as bone. DONE in three acts, 2 Aug, all exhibits on file. Act one (constraints misread as 25 mm section flats): the frame wins; no web emerges at lean mass; the optimizer builds only corner fillets: a finding about closed frames, kept as the contrast figure (k-bracket-bone.png). Act two (constraints as KU intended: 3 mm register skin + insert chunks): the skeleton appears: a trabecular fan of columns under the seat face landing on a heavy chord from back skin to P2 chunk (KU's predicted NW-SE tension diagonal, density 0.65 vs 0.29 on the other diagonal), laminated web to the V, marrow void over the rear bearing: femoral-head anatomy from chair loads (k-bracket-bone-2.png). Act three (the printable object): rev F four-bolt configuration, converged with continuation + projection, then the decisive post-processing move: the outer kite stays engineering-exact (flat register faces) while only the interior voids go organic, smoothed to 3 mm radii and cut through as windows: watertight STL, 346 cm3, seven windows, prints flat without supports (k-bracket-bone-print.stl/.step, proof in images/). Chapter thesis sharpened by the doing: Wolff's law and the Culmann crane comparison as classical frame [verify citations before print]; the optimizer proposes, the drawing office disposes, and the marrow cavity the optimizer refuses to fill is the cubby, which the easter egg had already claimed. Honest note stands: at chair loads the bracket is capacity-rich; bone-ness argues material minimalism and beauty, not necessity. Remaining: print the bone pair, photograph beside the tray pair; optional lattice-infill variant.

  6. Footprint / lifecycle / impact / reuse / heirloom. A third of a sheet; 98.5% utilization; salvage and heritage stock; knock-down forever via machine threads; heirloom = cheap breaks + user-replicable parts; repair sheet in the cubby; end-of-life = four flat panels of single material. PART IV: THE CULTURE (meaning, style, people)

  1. DIY / IKEA / user co-production. Weekendmeubelen 1934 as flat-pack before flat-pack; D494 pricing the customer's own labor; TaskRabbit as the assembly increment priced daily; one driver, eight bolts, no loose nuts: assembly UX as design object. [PART: memo section 3; verified early-anchor from CM record]

14b. Affordances (KU addition, 2 Aug). A chair is an invitation machine, and it invites things its designer never priced: the K's flipped-lounge worry as the seed; Gibson's affordances and Norman's perceived affordances as the frame (verify citations: Gibson 1979, Norman 1988). The chapter's fun: affordances are REAL loads: standing on seats, tipping on rear legs, the flipped orientation: design either forbids them (walls, warnings), absorbs them (margins), or adopts them (the crate lounge's angle was a designed recline; the X-tie was an abuse case promoted to a feature). Failure ordering as the engineering answer to affordance abundance: bolts before panels before brackets. Planned exhibit, in KU's words: could break some chairs: an instrumented destructive session: flipped-lounge load to failure, rear-leg tip to failure, nose-stand to failure: photograph the carnage, log the numbers against the predictions, and let the book show its margins instead of asserting them. Ties: ch. 10 (physics), ch. 13 (repair after the breaking). [TODO: the breaking day]

  1. Aesthetics / style / Memphis. A style is the shape of a feasible region; Memphis from pure function; color as the free dimension; Judd as the control case; the mark that IS the geometry. [HAVE: family graphics, k-chair-mark, the argument written]

  2. The sizzle: easter eggs, reclaimed wood, naming. The cubby and its cargo (family print, provenance sheet, repair sheet, block rose); heritage beams at ~$20 of story per chair; magnesium as marketing; the letter K; sanded bright faces; meaning priced separately from atoms (the 2x2). [PART: scattered; fun to write]

  3. AI as collaborator. KU inclination: woven through rather than ghettoized; recommend a light touch in-line (the dialogue is visible in the rev history: human field tests and vetoes, machine arithmetic and drafts, errors on both sides on the record: the arm 3t retraction, the 11 mm frame error, the seat-face direction correction) plus a short methods appendix on how the collaboration actually ran.   4. Coda / meta-chapter: the business model (KU, 2 Aug). The book performs its own thesis. The book is a WEB ASSET first: living document, generators embedded (the family explorer, the cut map regenerated for the reader's local sheet standard), the rev history visible; print-on-demand as the atoms instance; perhaps a small letterpress edition as the meaning instance: the production-regimes sidebar applied to the book itself. Monetization by conversion, not paywall: give away the design, sell the bracket. The panels are deliberately commodity (that IS the design), so value concentrates in the bracket pair + hardware kit (2 brackets, 8 bolts, 8 inserts, the cubby print), which ships in a padded envelope: the freight chapter's punchline: Rietveld shipped the wood flat; K ships no wood at all: bits travel free, grams ship cheap, kilograms are sourced locally. "How could you read the book and not order a chair" = content as showroom. Honest tensions to write: open design invites clones, so the moat is meaning (provenance, the mark, the rose, the archive) not secrecy, consistent with the 2x2; and the no-paywall stance is itself the 1934 ideology (D494 published its own cost structure). Precedents to verify before print: Opendesk-style distributed making, Prusa/Arduino open-hardware economics, kit-furniture history. [TODO]

Additions proposed (the "what else")

A. The physics of sitting: promoted above as ch. 10; the book needs one chapter where a free body diagram is a protagonist. B. Building as reading (method interlude or thread): the two bugs found only by building (Rietveld's 330 cleat; our peel); experimental history as design method; could live as short interludes between parts rather than a chapter. C. One cross-section, a family: chair, bench (one sheet exactly), stool, kids' chair at 0.8 scale; width as the free variable; the extrusion metaphor made literal. Could fold into ch. 9. D. How strong is strong enough: standards, BIFMA loads, the abuse case (the flipped chair), duty cycle vs stunt load: fold into ch. 10 if not separate. E. What a chair costs (the ledger chapter): full assembled-cost decomposition of the K at qty 1 / 100 / 10,000 beside D494's guilders: arguably the book's spine exhibit; could anchor ch. 4 rather than stand alone. F. The archive: a short chapter or photo essay on the primary sources themselves: D494, sheet 297, the worn white chair; how a cost list ends up an archival treasure. Could fold into ch. 3. G. Failure gallery: photographs of everything that broke or was wrong, with captions: the cracked museum arm, the 390 cleat, the mid-face bolt: honesty as a design-book genre move.

Production notes

Format (revised per KU, 2 Aug): web-native first, print-on-demand second. The web edition is the primary artifact: interactive where the content is parametric (family wedge, trade surface, cut map with the reader's sheet standard and kerf), static where it is documentary; every figure's generator script linkable from the figure. POD snapshot for shelf and gift. Every graphic already exists as SVG master (print-res safe). Convention: /chair-book/images holds curated print candidates; masters and generators stay in ChairProject (scripts are part of the argument and some belong IN the book as exhibits). Voice: the LTU essay's register. Every factual claim carries its source or its measurement; estimates marked as estimates; the two standing verification queues (century memo, build log) must clear before print.
