TN-11: The Mark
How the chair is signed so the signature survives with it. First draft 19 August 2026, from the builders'-marks thread of the same day. Status: DRAFT, a methods and standards note; the historical dates are VERIFIED as marked and the graphic is DERIVED from the published Keel geometry.
The claim
A chair meant to outlive its maker must be signed in a way that outlives him too, and that is three problems, not one: what the mark means, what graphic carries it, and how the graphic and its record survive a thousand years of weather and rebuilding. This note settles the methods. The meaning is argued in the chapter "Signing Work You Will Not Outlive"; this note is cited there for the mechanism.
The scheme has four marks, and the split is the one civilization already reached for silver: an institutional mark that belongs to the type, a personal mark that belongs to the maker, a growing column of personal marks that belong to the restorers, and a renewable record that belongs to the owners.
The four marks
STANDARD PRACTICE, English hallmarking, stated for the structure it gives us. The leopard's head was required on English silver by the statute of 1300; the maker's mark identifying the individual goldsmith was added by ordinance in 1363; the date letter followed in 1478, and with it the modern hallmark was essentially complete [VERIFIED against the Assay Office London history of hallmarking, 19 Aug 2026]. The lesson is that a maker's mark alone means little; a maker's mark beside a standard the object provably meets is what carries meaning forward. That is the Open Chair Standard four centuries early.
Mapped onto the chair:
- THE INSTITUTIONAL GLYPH. The two-triangle-and-keel figure above is the type mark: it says "this is a Keel Chair, conforming." It belongs to the standard, not to any person, so it appears on every conforming Keel Chair whoever builds it, and it is cast or cut at origin. It should carry the standard edition it conforms to, the way the hallmark carried a date letter.
- THE MAKER'S CIPHER. A personal hand-struck mark, the first entry in the register. A different maker building a conforming Keel Chair casts the same glyph but strikes their own cipher and starts their own lineage. This keeps an open standard honest: the glyph is shared, authorship is not.
- THE RESTORER'S CIPHERS. Each structural rebuild adds a hand-struck personal mark beside the last. This is the succession of assay wardens, each vouching in turn, and it is the record of structural custody.
- THE CUSTODIAN'S CARD. A renewable record of ownership, the library book's date-stamp card, held in a slot and archived when full. Ownership runs on a faster clock than rebuilding and must not be struck into the permanent register, or the metal fills in three centuries.
The glyph is constructed and impersonal, reproducible by anyone from the four numbers. The ciphers are gestural and singular, in the spirit of the kao, the stylized personal signature that appears in China under the Southern Qi (479 to 502) and in Japan by the mid-tenth century [VERIFIED against the Ueda Soko tradition source, 19 Aug 2026]. That contrast is a feature: the type is buildable by all, the person cannot be copied, and a reader can tell the one institutional mark from the many personal ones at a glance.
The graphic
The mark is the chair's own side elevation reduced to a single figure: two congruent 40-60-80 triangles offset along a shared keel, drawn in the project's orientation, back to the left, keel raking to its foot at the lower left [DERIVED from the Keel kiss points; k2-mark.svg]. It is a banker mark in the medieval sense, a figure that is the thing it marks, and it is constructible by anyone in any century from the same four numbers that build the chair.
Two properties fall out of the geometry rather than being imposed. First, POINT SYMMETRY: two congruent triangles related by a 180 degree rotation about the keel's midpoint read the same inverted, which is the signature of a durable mark and the reason a hallmark punch cannot be struck upside down wrongly. Second, the figure reads as a K upright, a 2 or a Z turned, so the name is inside the mark.
THE ONE DESIGN RULE, and it inverts the usual worry. The mark's legibility lives in its two triangular apertures, not in its strokes, so the constraint is a MAXIMUM stroke width, not a minimum: roughly one eighth of the mark's height, above which the triangles crowd shut and the figure collapses to a blob [DERIVED, the candidate sheet, 19 Aug 2026]. This is the mason's discipline, and it means the mark wants to be cut as clean thin lines, which suits deep intaglio and a struck punch better than heavy cast relief.
The medium, and why depth beats surface
The failure mode at millennial scale is never the graphic and almost always the interface: how deep the mark sits in its own material, and how the signed element is held to the chair. Rank the methods by whether the mark is integral or applied.
DEEP INTAGLIO, material actually removed, is the only surface-independent record: chiseled into hardwood, engraved or struck into metal, or cut by a laser configured to ablate to a real depth. Laser annealing and most "laser marking" only change the surface color of metal and are a decade technology, not a millennium one; if a plate is lasered, specify ablation to a stated depth, not a color-change mark. CAST RELIEF in bronze is the aristocrat: the Dancing Girl of Mohenjo-daro, a lost-wax bronze older than 2000 BCE, is intact [STANDARD], which is why the thousand-year chapter reaches for bronze. SURFACE MARKS (ink, paint, gild, most laser marking, adhesive labels) are not thousand-year methods and are excluded from the primary record.
So the primary mark is cut deep into the keel itself, the one part the whole doctrine says persists. A screwed-on or glued-on plate can be lost; a mark in the keel cannot be, short of destroying the chair.
The transferable relic
The keel is renewed at rebuilds, so the deep mark in a given keel survives only as long as that keel. To carry the signature across keel replacements, embed a small bronze element in the keel, and there is naval precedent exactly on theme. Romans placed coins in the mast step, a non-structural deposit tucked into the ship's spine, recovered by archaeologists thousands of years later [VERIFIED against Carlson, "Mast-Step Coins among the Romans," International Journal of Nautical Archaeology, 2007, 19 Aug 2026]. And the ship's bell is the artifact preserved or transferred when a hull is scrapped, carrying the vessel's identity and struck with names [VERIFIED against the US Naval History and Heritage Command and the Heritage journal study of scrapped ships' bells, 19 Aug 2026]. For a chair whose spine is called the keel, these are the tradition, not a metaphor.
THE CHOSEN LOCATION, 19 Aug 2026 (KU): the bronze element is the CLEAT at the seat-to-back interface, under the seat, made as a bracket at the 80 degree apex, either an L at that included angle or, better, a triangle bracket that is the chair's own geometry in miniature; the register is engraved on its sides. This is stronger than the keel mortise it replaces, and it makes the element the chair's ship's bell rather than its mast-step coin. A ship's bell belongs to no single plank and so survives every rebuild and transfers to the next hull; a bracket at the seat-back apex belongs to no single wooden member and so outlives the keel, the seat, and the back alike, the one durable fitting that carries the identity across all renewals.
The design rules that follow: LOW SCRAP VALUE, HIGH LINEAGE VALUE, small enough that its metal is worth nothing to melt. LIGHT DUTY, NOT NONE: the seat-back apex is one of the two 80 degree joints the keel does not own, and the frame solve puts the workhorse compression in the front, not here, so a bronze bracket at this apex is a keeper holding the joint closed rather than a highly stressed member; it earns its place by doing a real if modest job, which is better than a gratuitous plaque, and it removes the wear-item objection because it is barely worked. THE ENGRAVED FACES ARE NOT BEARING FACES: the two legs bear on seat and back, the cheeks carry the register, so the record is never abraded by the joint it serves. And a light bracket at a lightly loaded apex, in bronze, in a protected spot under the seat, is a thousand-year part by the same argument the hardware chapter makes for bronze.
The register and its succession
The bronze relic carries the register: the cast institutional glyph and standard edition, then the maker's hand-struck cipher as entry one, then a column left for restorers. The first maker's mark does double duty. Struck by hand beside the cast glyph, it is a worked example: a restorer in 2226 sees [cast glyph][hand cipher][blank] and understands the protocol without a manual, the way the keel is its own template. The register documents itself by having been used once.
The marks are HAND-STRUCK with a punch, not engraved, so the record stays writable by anyone with a punch and a fire in any century. The two clocks are kept apart: the slow clock, makers and restorers, writes in permanent struck bronze; the fast clock, households over generations, writes on the renewable card and is archived, the Ise renewal applied to attribution.
RETENTION IS THE POINT. A relic whose transfer enrolls the restorer into a two-hundred-year lineage, giving them a permanent dated place beside the maker's own hand, is a relic the stranger wants to move. Provenance is a retention mechanism: the chair carrying the names of everyone who kept it is the chair no one discards. This is the longevity doctrine, custody is the design object, rendered as hardware.
Open questions
- Standard-edition indicator on the cast glyph: a struck year, or a single numeral for the frozen standard edition. Needs a convention before the production freeze.
- Bronze alloy and mass for the relic: silicon bronze is the marine standard; the mass should be the minimum that takes a legible strike. Pin against the bronze memo (TN-3).
- The mortise geometry and its effect on the keel section: it must remove no structural capacity. Site it in the wing and prove the section still passes the width check (TN-9).
- Punch design and depth for the ciphers: a personal punch is itself an heirloom tool; how it is made and passed down is unresolved.
- Whether the custodian card is paper, a thin wood slat, or a second small metal tag, and where the archived cards live.
- The exact graphic freeze: keel-to-apex gap or continuous, foot length, corner treatment. The working glyph is k2-mark.svg; the frozen mark is a production-freeze decision.
