# The plate: image credits

Images for the chapter "Why Every Designer Does a Chair" (designers.html).
Every image in plate/ is recorded here at download time: exact source file,
author, license, and the date checked. An image without a clean CC BY,
CC BY-SA, CC0, Free Art License, or public domain license does not enter the
repo; its frame on the page says "photograph pending rights" until one clears.

Project photographs (banner/krat.jpg, banner/vilbert.jpg, banner/2t.jpg)
carry the site's own credit: photographs Karl T. Ulrich, except as already
credited on the home page for archival material.

All sourced images are from Wikimedia Commons; the source file below is the
`File:` page at `https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/<File:...>`. Downloaded
via Special:FilePath at 1200 px and re-encoded to JPEG, except where noted.

Notes. plate/thonet-14.jpg replaced on 2026-09-06: the earlier file (File:Michael
Thonet 14.jpg, Holger.Ellgaard, CC BY-SA 3.0, 370x500) was the correct chair
but too small for print; the replacement is the full-resolution Commons
original (2848x4288) downloaded by KU, trimmed 6 percent at the top, resized
to 1200 px on the long edge and re-encoded, camera metadata stripped. The
Free Art License requires the author's name and the license name with any
reproduction and share-alike terms for derivative works; the resize is a
reproduction, not a derivative, and the print credits page must carry
"Henry Townsend, Free Art License" for this image. Candidates considered and
not used, both in Drive photos/inbox: File:Thonet chair no.18.jpg (Dominik
Matus, CC BY-SA 3.0; a No. 18, the 1876 hairpin-back model, not the 14) and
File:Table & Chairs by Philippe Starck.jpg (Starck Ting via Flickr, CC BY
2.0; 1024x768, the Louis Ghost sharing the frame with a Victoria Ghost and a
table; the CC0 image already in place is the better one).

## Skipped: no acceptably licensed image found (checked 2026-08-19)

The page shows "photograph pending rights" for these until a clean CC BY,
CC BY-SA, CC0, Free Art License, or public-domain photograph is found:
